I had a feeling NM was gonna turn into a battleground state. Gary Johnson was a native son so he took a good chunk of the vote in 16, won't happen this time.

Clinton won by 66k votes in 16, Gary Johnson got 74K votes...Even if Trump doesn't win it this kind of news can make the democrats put money into NM if they think there is a chance even a slim one Trump wins it.

Obama won NM by 15% in 2008 and 10% in 2012. Clinton won it by 8%.

In 2018, a Democrat won the Senate seat with 54% of the vote with a third party present (Johnson).

A non-incumbent Democrat won the gubernatorial election by 14.5%.

Democrats won the statewide House vote by 20% in 2018.

This does not seem to be a state that will go Republican in 2020. I don't think we'll see Biden defending New Mexico either.

This is a somewhat surprise, but I guess if you take Johnson, who was a 2 term, very popular governor it does make some sense. It is way to early to even think about who will win the state.

Funny you say that.

A group of nurses that work with my cousin are part of a much bigger group here in Florida where their plan was to move to Albuquerque, NM where their primary goal was to make NM vote for Biden. The medical industry and the universities all over the country are doing this, transplanting people that are known democrats to states to try and get the electoral ballots.

Increased turnout due to mail-in ballots being sent to all registered voters.

Quote:
an influx of absentee ballots played a role in the increased voter turnout.

...mail absentee applications to every eligible voter before the election ...

“I think one of the lessons learned here is that when you give voters an easier way of voting, they will take advantage of it,” Sanderoff said. “I don’t think it’s any accident that we had very high turnout and an extremely high proportion of voters doing it by absentee ballot.”

This doesn't sound laughably untrue whatsoever.

I get your point that the Democrats control New Mexico for now.

But the top bolded line struck me, it looks like the Democrat's lead in New Mexico is decreasing every election. Why do you think that is? Some kind of reaction against California?

Because former NM gov Gary Johnson recieved 9% of the vote in 2016. Trump got a smaller vote share in New Mexico than Romney 2012 and McCain 2008. He"ll lose the state by 15%+ in November

Biden will probably do worse that Hillary. And Hillary got 48.2% of the vote.
Johnson got 9%.
I was a Johnson voter in 2016. I support Trump now.

Don't know if Trump will win NM, but he'll come pretty close. The reason I say that is because George Bush increased his # votes by 90,000 between 2000 and 2004 (286K to 376K).

Bush lost NM to Al Gore, but beat Kerry in 2004. The power of the incumbent counts.

FWIW, something changed in New Mexico. Starting in 2004, the number of voters who actually voted has increased notably.
In 2000, 592,000 people voted; in 2004, 740,000 people voted and it has been that way ever since.
There has been no significant population growth.

A more complete picture to compare how a particular state is trending is to compare how a state compares to the national average. There has been relatively small movement in the state compared to the country as a whole since 2008, it basically moves as the nation has, and there is little evidence in the last couple years to suggest anything is going to be different in 2020.

New Mexico
2008 Dem + 7.86
2012 Dem +6.29
2016 Dem +6.13
