I have used an extension cable for my plug in Ford hybrid for several years without a problem. Plugged in (extension to outlet, not charger to the car) today, checked on an hour later and the cord at the outlet end was very hot. Unplugged right away fearing damage or even fire.
So, tomorrow I would like to buy another extension, just needs to be the right gauge/amps .
What kind I need?
It's Level 1 charger, and I need only 6 ft, but can buy longer.

I assume this is a standard wall socket outlet at 120V and you're drawing from an outlet with a pretty normal 15A or 20A breaker and you're trying to get as close down to 6 feet of cable as possible, then a 12 gauge / 3 wire extension cord should be good. If you want to be extra extra safe and you think you're drawing something more like 30A (which would be pretty rare for a home wall socket), then a 10 gauge / 3 wire would be good.
