I've recently noticed Wilford Brimley in some movies from the 70's and was surprised to learn how young he actually was at the time, he was born in 1935. But by the 80's he was always playing much older characters. In "Our House" he played Diedre Hall's mother. In "Cocoon" he played a senior citizen along with castmates who were 20-30 years older.
Any clues to why some people can pull this off?
Is it merely "acting"? If so it was probably a smart move on his part, ensuring him decades of extra work.

Combination of excess weight, loose facial skin, receding hairline, bushy eyebrows, thick glasses, and that trademark walrus mustache. Acting old and crotchety was just the icing on the geriatric cake.

Yes, which makes me think that it was a combination of the mustache, voice, and overall acting.
