Marvel's Thor first appeared in a comic book dated August 1962 almost 5 decades before the April-May, 2011 debut of the film version. I imagine most Scandinavian people below the age of 70 are aware that part of their literary history had been co-opted as a comic character.

The Prose Edda, is an Old Norse work of literature written in Iceland during the early 13th century. The work is often assumed to have been written, or at least compiled, by the Icelandic scholar, lawspeaker, and historian Snorri Sturluson c. 1220. It is considered the fullest and most detailed source for modern knowledge of Norse mythology.

Probably better than Americans can considering Americans are in general more racist than Western Europeans. Its not like the Thor movie is a historical work its fiction...

I think the majority is indifferent. It is just another superhero movie series. Hollywood has made Viking movies for decades. The Viking helmet with horns, for instance, is a Hollywood invention.

My only objection is how Americans pronounce 'Thor' . The 'h' in 'Thor' is silent in Norwegian. It is almost as painful as the pronunciation of Björk (the Islandic artist). The 'ö' sound in Björk is similar to the 'u' sound in 'burn'.
