I wear running shoes for walking as well. The wider sole at the heel helps keep me from walking on the outsides of my feet. Favorite brands are Brooks and Saucony.

Also, try a heel lock when you lace up. That's a big help to keep your feet stable inside the shoe as well. I have wide feet at the ball, and narrow at the heel. A heel lock is a godsend.
