I don't know about "rural feel" of Fargo, I think of it as more of a sophisticated college town — although not as much as Madison, Missoula, Iowa City and Austin — but still nice.
My sister lives in Wheaton and I've lived in Naperville, Elgin, Winnetka, and Oak Park, IL. I now live in Minnesota near Moorhead.
Fargo has a lot of the same stores Naperville has if it's a chain. The only thing they don't have is Portillo's on Ogden Ave. Yum! Housing is much cheaper and they do have a Fairfield Inn like on Diehl but they do not have a Wyhdham (Lisle) or higher end Marriott ...but who cares. They do have Target, Walmart, etc...and they even have a Walgreens just like every corner on Naperville. Ogden is where I used to go.
My cousin is a doctor at Edward Hospital and lives near Book Road. Her house was over $300K that in Fargo/Moorhead would be worth about half that. Property taxes are much lower and get this....no need to purchase an IPASS.
Oh, I forgot to mention Fargo/Moorhead has a better Children's Museum than the one in Naperville on Washington Street.
