After years, I finally got the library to request a copy of Kay Nielsen's book of children' fairy tales, East of the Sun and West of the Moon. The stories are dismal, and I can't even tell if Nielsen is supposed to be the author. But the artwork is fascinating.

Nielsen was a Dane, born in 1886, who also lived in the U.S. at some point.

His art is very mannered, with elongated figures that supposedly derive in part from Beardsley
