Does anyone have recommendations for a good auto insurance company in the Cape Coral/Ft Myers area? I have an insurance background and some family is moving there so they have been showing me the quotes. They would prefer a local agent and want good coverage but the rates are so high compared to Columbus, Ohio area and the few quotes they have received this far have been with Progressive. Has anyone relocated from Columbus, Ohio and did you find your auto insurance premium increased drastically? Thanks for any help!

I am not from the Columbus area (from suburban Chicago) but one of the big shockers for me was the cost of auto insurance in SW Florida vs the Midwest. For identical coverage, I pay the same for a Mazda in Florida as I pay for a Jaguar and Acura combined up north. I shop the coverage every year. In 8 years I have been with Geico, then Safeco, and now I am with Allstate after Safeco increased my rates by 25% 2 years ago (part time FL resident with no violations or accidents). Progressive was always higher, but not the highest. I have been told by every agent I have talked to that the rates are so high because of the very large number of uninsured drivers in FL. I have heard that it is even worse in SE Florida. My observations are that in addition to uninsured drivers, many FL drivers are reckless. Blowing through red lights at 55mph is very common (sometimes 2 and 3 cars at a time) as is turning right on red without even slowing down, let alone stopping. It seems like there is a fatal accident on I75 almost every day between North Fort Myers and Naples. In the Chicago area, there are at least 10 times more drivers and 10 times more highways but fatal accidents do not happen that often. It amazes me how many single car accidents there are between Alico and Bonita Beach Road on I75. There is nothing at all dangerous in that stretch, yet people are always finding a way to flip their vehicles.
