Saw article in Naples news about Collier/Bonita/Estero looking at repurpose the old train tracks for buses or hikers. Where we are now, passenger service was added back on old dormant freight tracks (since ~1990). Initially was skeptical as a tax payer but it proved to be a success. Nice way to travel north/south without jumping into a car and finding parking. Maybe that doesn’t apply well to SWFL but curious if anyone ever evaluated a light rail service?

It's a waste of money, ridership would be too low year round, the recapture period could be decades, and this s not the northeast and don't want to be either - we need attention to roads for vehicular traffic first, screw light rail, fast rail might work between Tampa, Orlando down to Miami, but that might be an expensive waste too.

^This.

There's really only one line that runs north/south between Fort Myers-Naples.
That track is in really rough shape once you get south of Alico Rd, and none of it runs anywhere near where anyone needs to be. Mostly thru industrial areas that have no need of it now, and people's backyards that probably wouldn't appreciate a train of any sort rolling thru at any hour.

Nope, not gonna happen in SWFL.

train travel is a good thing..less congestion on the roads..less pollution..new rail lines would be easy to lay down here in Florida..just not enough money for it I guess..I'd be all for it..

Wrong. You know nothing about the process of laying down rail on Florida's relatively soft, sandy, unstable soil in many areas especially where the water table is somewhat closer to the surface. It's a real project to achieve the needed level of stability. N.othing is "easy", or than wishing for it

As a sidenote, Florida's Brightline rail on the east coast has become a nightmare. Officials in Florida are considering legislation aimed at curbing the high number of deaths on the tracks of a new passenger rail line. Brightline is a privately owned rail service operating trains between Miami and West Palm Beach. In its first two years, more than 40 people have been killed by Brightline trains on tracks and at rail crossings, earning it a designation as the nation's deadliest railroad. Speeds of the Brightline are almost 80 mph. People crossing the rails have been a deadly problem.
