How people twist that into "negativity" is beyond me, other than some folks just need to hear what they want to hear to validate their desires....

As far as a sub forum is concerned, I dont think it's necessary. Several months ago I floated the idea of a sticky at the top of the page. A "checklist" of sorts where prospective relocatees(is that a word?)could fill in the answers to a quick questionaire(e.g. Do you work for a living, or are you retired?, Children? Ages? etc.) When people come a'posting asking the similar questions that have been asked a hundred times before, one of the regulars here could suggest they fill out the checklist, copy, cut and paste it to a new thread, and we can quickly put them in their place...er proper category. And possibly refer them to prior threads that may be pertinent to their query.

I also suggest people use the "search" function, AFAIK, it works just fine.

Of course these are simply suggestions on my part, not a critique of the way the forum is run.

And, lastly, I will leave you all with a little food for thought, as too why I feel it necessary to make these warnings.............

Ezekiel 33:3-6.......Make of it what you will.

You have legitimate concerns, but it is a great time to buy, and there are many nice areas in Florida. Your best bet is to rent for a while and see what areas would serve you best prior to buying a home there.

There is no reason for this woman to be in this predicament, she purchased at a reasonable price at the time. I guess you can play the blame game, on the reckless lending and borrowing. Why would anyone put their home in jeopardy is beyond me, borrowing against the inflated prices of their homes, living above their means, the result is lots of Mr. & Mrs. Pelligrinos.. Everybody wants it now, this is a debt culture society, what ever happened to saving our hard earned money, delayed gratification? shame, Americas values are in the toilet.

I lived in Punta Gorda though our house hunting involved Cape Coral.

What was mentioned above: RENT. This is the best way to truly now what you want after you are there for an established period of time. What you may like in the beginning you may start to dislike 6 months down the road after you are in the neighborhood 24/7 & see it beyond a few trips w/ the realtor.

Punta Gorda? No, however it was daytime.
I second what you said Chaotix!!!! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that has lived within my means.
Yachtcare, your "sticky" was a good idea. I disagree on your search idea, I've tried searching "nice areas" or "safe areas" & get lots of doom & gloom. I don't need to hear what I want to hear, however a "yeah, this area is nice" sometimes would help.
My neighbors are snowbirds, they live in Bradenton, I don't find people have anything nice to say about it on this forum, but they love it & feel totally safe there. I may look there too.

Not so sure there is as much of a gap as people want to believe between retirees and working people.

The gap is between people with money and without money. There are plenty of "retired" people who still need to work part-time to make ends meet. Just walk into any Publix or Wal-Mart and look at the age of some of the employees.

Well, the thread is about Cape Coral. You might find some positive posts up in the Sarasota/Bradenton forum. I know that I personally don't comment about that area because I don't know much about it.

But the New York Times has specifically reported on Cape Coral and, in the past, Fort Myers and Lehigh Acres.

The important thing is that you are self-sustaining. Before you buy, meet your neighbors and talk to the cops. I give that advice for anywhere.

I'll bet you didn't get an opinion from youyr neighbors on an internet site.
Keep in mind the most vocal are usually the disatisfied.
People who have no complaints, more often than not, don't think to let everyone know.
Even if the negatives you read about exist you have to take them with a grain of salt and relativity.

"Before you buy, meet your neighbors and talk to the cops."

Good advice, hiknapster. Another suggestion is to read the local newspapers....you can get them on-line. One more thing.....go back to a neighborhood you might be interested in, but at different times of the day, and....different days altogether! Best advice has been given many, many times....RENT first! :-)

Joy12345,
That's because forums like this are heavens for people who love to complain. Several of the people in this thread do not even live here (and have never lived in Cape Coral), yet they post over and over about how bad it is here.
I've lived here for the last 15 years (Cape Coral and Pine Island). I love it. It's really nice, clean, and safe. Jobs are hard to come by right now and it's really hot in the summer, but I'm not complaining.
I moved away from Cape Coral (all the way to Pine Island because I like to live in the "country", but the cape is far from a ghetto. I work in the Cape and I have many friends, relatives and co-workers who still live in the Cape. They love it, they don't lock thier doors and don't complain endlessly. I would say NE cape is the least desirable, but it's not terrible. Most of SE, SW and much of NW are beautiful. Feel free to message me with any questions and I'll give you an honest opinion. As you've seen you'll only get the doom and gloom side here.
