Many people assume that all products from Dollar Tree are subpar. I've been a Dollar Tree shopper for years, some of the products sold at DT are good quality. Some things are Dollar Tree are a waste of money though.
For those of us who shop at Dollar Tree, what items do you buy?
I buy MUSHROOMS, WETWIPES, GREEN ALCOHOL, SOCKS, GLASS CLEANER, AMMONIA FOR FLOOR and QUICK ERASERS
I go in for one or two things and end up with $36 worth every time. That seems to be my magic number.
It's also a good treat for the grandkids. "OK, kids, you can pick out three things each!" That'll keep them busy for an hour. It's also a good lesson in shopping dynamics. They have to decide whether the package with two larger rubber balls is preferable or not to the package with three smaller rubber balls. Helps them to figure out which is the best value.
I LOVE shopping at Dollar Tree. Yes, some of the products are crap, but many of them are a great value.
-Greeting cards. 2/$1
-Balloons. You can get helium balloons for all sorts of occasions.
-Gift bags and tissue paper.
-Party supplies.
-Unique dishes...I have some ice cream sundae bowls and such that I got there. Glass, good quality.
-Spices
-the Betty Crocker line of kitchen tools, like spatulas, kitchen scissors, etc.
-SOME makeup (certainly not all, but sometimes you can find name brand makeup there)
-Rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide...
-LA's Totally Awesome degreaser...works better than Greased Lightning!
-Some other cleaning supplies
-Phone cases
-Holiday decorations (I have a Halloween "village" set that is super cool! I think they have one for Christmas too. It's not quite as nice as the "fancy" ones but is quite nice for the price, really!
-Body spray (the lotions and shower gels are really thin, but I have some nice-smelling body sprays)
-Candles, candle holders
-Craft supplies
It's a target of opportunity store. If I'm in that shopping center, I'll stop by and check out the food.
I keep a running account in my head so I know when the prices are below what I get at HEB and when they are not. Sometimes, I make out like a bandit, sometimes not.
One thing I will note is that with canned goods, I am very food cautious. If I open up some canned mackerel and there is a slight hiss, down the drain it goes. It was probably just the breaking of the seal but I don't take the chance.
As that those at Dollar Tree are from China, I feel less of a loss and more cautious than say the Chicken of the Sea I get from HEB or Wally World.

Nah, there are a lot of things that I don't/won't buy there:
-Most dishes. I do like the "unique" stuff, but for drinking glasses or whatnot, you're better off buying a boxed set from Wal-Mart ($10 for a 16-piece set is what I paid not too long ago) vs. $1 each. Same thing with plates, silverware.
-Dish towels or rags. Usually cheaper in bigger packages elsewhere.
-Most groceries. Package sizes are usually small. Many items are cheaper elsewhere (canned spaghetti sauce is $1 at DT, $0.88 at Wal-Mart).
-Shampoo, lotion, shower gel
-Most of the makeup, except the name brands
-Most kitchen items, most are garbage, but I do like the Betty Crocker brand (for a buck, anyway, and the red matches my kitchen)
-Toys (mostly garbage, some things are probably worth a buck though)
-Crayons, pens (they suck)
-Any kind of "tech" item
-Any kind of tool
-Medicine, bandages
-Toilet paper or paper towels (better deals to be had elsewhere, including Dollar General)
...and many other things that I don't think are a good value. But I'd probably buy about HALF of the items in the store, if it was something I needed or wanted. What can I say? I'm a sucker for a deal. Where else can you go shopping and find so many items that are only $1??

I like Big Lots much better. I get brooms and other cleaning supplies there. They also carry delicate fabric wash ($1), which is generic Woolite. I think Dollar General has it, too.
Dollar Tree and Walmart are my "go to" stores.
I buy lots and lots of things there. But I have recently started to really notice the items that I might be able to get cheaper at Walmart.
As for Big Lots....
...for me it's a waste -- unless -- I haven't found what I'm looking for elsewhere.
Big Lots is not as cheap as DT or Walmart -- so for me there's no reason to go.
For the most part -- certainly not for weekly or even monthly trips -- it's not offering my anything I couldn't get elsewhere for less.

I really need to check out Big Lots more often. It's kind of in an "out of the way" location (but not inconvenient for me at all), so I never really think about going there. But the times that I've been there, I've found some good deals.
I am in Dollar General all the time. I think they have great deals, and I always use their digital coupons to save even more. The $5 off of a $25 purchase coupons that are usually valid on Saturdays (can find at bottom of receipt or can load through digital coupons) are awesome!!
Greeting birthday cards .5o per card. I like the foil sheets, they are pre cut & it is so easy to grab one to line a pan, instead of the cutting & tearing that I used to do when I bought the tolls in boxes. Gift bags & gag gifts.
The eggs are a dollar a dozen, which is the cheapest I have seen around here. Sometimes they will have frozen spring rolls, 10 in the packet & they are quite good, heated up in toaster oven. Allergy pills, the generic benadryl, I think it is around 36 pills for a buck.
I also like the bags of miniature candy bars.
