It can be, especially if one still has a mortgage and a car payment, neither of which we have, but there's a lot of slack in our spending. About $18k has gone to travel this year, and that's not a normal expense. Necessary, but not at all normal. If we were living on $2500 a month, the equivalent of $30k, we would have $1000 left after paying all of our basic expenses, including groceries.
