Walmart (and I'm sure some others) charges a little extra per ounce for the some of the larger-sized items of the same National brand product, sometimes.
You think you are saving money by buying the bulk or family-size package, but you're not.
Compare the price-per-ounce, if you're truly frugal.
Unless I'm buying a ton of stuff, I actually plug in the amounts in my phone as I shop and by the time I get to checkout I already know to the penny how much $$$ it should be, so easy enough if the amount is over.
Also, unless it's a lot of items I do remember the cost per item... basically. So if item A = $3.99, if it beeps in @ $5 I will know it's off.
BTW where I live there is a standard code of practice for the Point of Sale where if the item scans in more $$$ than the tag on the shelf or advertised price, you get that item for free (to limit of $10) or $10 off that item.

When barcode scanners were introduced, many supermarkets had that policy as well.
Most don't now — they just refund the difference.
