Sometime during COVID (when it became impossible to get an in-person haircut), I decided to just try cutting my own hair at home, and purchased a $60 Wahl clipper set.
That was over three years ago now; doing some math - I used to get a haircut every 2-3 months (call it 5x per year), at around $20 per time = $100/year. So, that would have been just over $300 to date, instead of the actual $60 - and each passing year adds another $100 not spent.
This only works because I keep my hair relatively short and simple - if it was longer and more styled, I don't think I could get good results trying to do it myself, but I'm fine with that - my hair pretty much looks the same as how I've kept it for decades, so this works for me.
I have on occasion, but I am happy to support a local lady trying to make extra money (salon in her home).
$17 + tip every eight weeks is NOT a budget buster.

Wow, that's pretty inexpensive for a haircut.
I cut and colored my own hair for years because I didn't have the extra money to get it done. In the past ten years, I found myself not as broke as I once was, and I started to treat myself to getting my hair cut and colored professionally. My friend's daughter is a stylist and in addition to her job at a salon, she had a setup in her mother's basement and I paid her directly to do my hair. It's a luxury I allow myself after having to do it at home for a couple of decades.
Fortunately, my hair was so thick and wavy that I could cut it and the mistakes wouldn't be obvious.
Now I don't worry about the color. COVID made me aware that it's all grey now, and I let it go natural. I still have her cut it, though, three or four times a year. I look awful with short hair, so I keep it a little longer than shoulder length.
It is!
If I have the same person cut it in the salon, it costs twice as much.
I give her $20 at her house, and she comes out ahead, as do I (pun intended)

I found this video on Youtube and have been cutting my own hair like this for about a year now. Before that it was always long and straight without layers, easy for me to snip off split ends by myself. I don't think I've gotten a haircut at a salon since the 90s.
Last few decades. I wasn't ever happy with hair salons. Cutting, highlights, dyeing, light perm - all done by myself. Learned many techniques.
I also cut my son's and my grandkids hair.
DIL prefers to be seeing in expensive salons
Nowadays, you can learn profi techniques on YouTube.

Learned to DIY during Covid, Now I only go to Salon maybe at most 3 times a year. Its not hard at all, youtube videos, patience. The cleaning up takes longer than the in between 2-3 week haircut most guys with short hair need. I use pretty much all clippers.
