I am pretty frugal, but the one thing I treat myself to is a haircut every 6 weeks. I would never try to cut it myself. I pay 47.00 for it. Yup, expensive, I know, but it's the one thing that makes me feel good. My husband cuts his own hair, offers to cut mine...oh hail no!

I'm like you, OP. I started doing my hair and beard myself with Wahl clippers during Covid. I always used to get a buzzcut anyway which they charge the same at the barbershop for as doing more complicated cuts. It always felt like a waste of money. Glad I learned to do it myself. I use a dropcloth to catch the clippings.
Last year, I decided to treat myself and went to my old barbershop. I got a new guy who went overboard to make it perfect. I don't want perfect, which lasts only a day or two anyway, so I found it annoying to have him hovering over me so long, and the razor blades make me nervous. He even massaged my scalp with smelly cigarette fingers. Thanks, bub!
I also tried one of those chain salons, but the woman there did a horrible job. She shaved the back of my neck way too high which I never asked for, and left some longer stray hairs on top. Ever since then I've been doing it myself!
I stopped going to the barber when covid hit. I bought a pair of clippers and decided to cut my own. I was never really happy with the barber so it was an easy decision. I am 60 y/o and really have no concerns of having the perfect haircut.
I bought some Oster hair clippers in 1992 when I was stationed in Germany. I haven't paid for a haircut since. Over the years, it's either been high and tight or just a short buzz cut all over.
I would never cut or color my own hair. I pay $38.+ tip, every two months. A couple of times a year I get highlights also for about $100.
I have been cutting hubby's hair since Covid and it comes out nice. No. 2 on the bottom, no. 4 on the top and a few snips of the scissors to blend. I tell him I’m running a tab, which I use to pay my hairstylist.
My hair is straight, worn in ponytail or on top of my head so a stylist is pointless (last went to salon in my 40s).
Husband cuts the back when it gets too long, I cut bangs in front.
I admire women whose hair has a stylish cut but mine never looked like that.
After asking a stylest to trim the ends a number of years ago, and her definition of a trim was 4 inches, I continue to do my own. I break into a sweat when my stylest asks me for a trim. I do go for highlights, although I have done my own as well.
I comb the hair in front and trim the ends even. I comb in all over to one side and even that out and then to the other and even it out. When I put it in braids to go workout, I check that the ends are even. For the fringe, I do my own. Very easy to do.
Yep, have my hair and my DH's for the past 7 years or so.
Always felt scalped at the salons and my hair is curly and hides a multitude of mistakes I might make.
Used to color my hair at home and stopped that during Covid. My color is now "pandemic platinum" and I get quite a few compliments on it. Took some getting used to after years of being a brunette, but my hair and scalp now feel very healthy.
I cut my hair during the great pandemic lockdown. It looked bad.
