We have recently moved again a couple months ago from one side of our city to another. The first house had no trees anywhere on the property so raking wasn't necessary for us. And people in that area who did have to rake were allowed to just burn their leaves.

Where we live now is a section with LOTS of trees everywhere in people's yards. Well, the house Hubby bought had so many leaves that it took 2 guys most of the day to get all those leaves up.

But what I don't understand is that they put the leaves in piles on the side of the road for the city to pick up and I saw other folks all across town doing the same thing! I've never heard of that. Up North, we always had to bag our leaves after raking.

Today is Saturday. The truck won't be back around again until Friday. Those leaves will get blown for sure and have to be re-raked 1 or more times before Friday, I'm sure. And all that re-raking every time the wind blows seems like a lot of annoying, unnecessary work.

Is it the same where you live? Do u and your neighbors bag your leaves or leave them in piles?

Just a different way of doing something. Use to burn them.

Down here it's pine needles, some other greenery that is cut; and no frost. So we dug a pit and add all garden and acceptable waste that can be composted to the pit. We water it and dig it up about 3 years later. Spread as compost on this 'beach sand'...Florida has for 'soil', and actually get plants to grow where they never grew before. You only need to enrich the first 2 or 3 inches of soil layer to get plants started. So we recycle everything here, to turn sand into a rich, macro-layered, environment friendly to earthworms and all other microorganisms...including higher life forms.

edit: You would be amazed at the creatures we see come out of the pit in 3 year intervals.
Hundreds of life forms, and they scramble for the dark, enriched man-made soil they had been encompassed in. We spread it thick enough that they will survive and thrive. It's a constant establishment of soil-building. It's working, I have all kinds of fruit trees, fruiting vines, veggies, etc. Beautiful!

Our town only picks up if the leaves are bagged up in paper bags. The most time consuming part of the work is the bagging and my town only picks up 1 day in Nov so we need to finish the cleanup by then. This year, I got a second hand electric mower and blower so I can break down some of the leaves and let them stay on the lawn.

How does your city collect the piles - do they use a vacuum truck?

I burn very little as I use a mulching push mower.

I make leaf mold out of them. It makes the best soil you can find anywhere.

No we do not put them in piles because there is no reason to. Leaves naturally disintegrate.
And we certainly wouldn't burn them to destroy the air wreaking havock on others. Some people are highly allergic and are reliant upon CPAP & BPAP machines. Some only use it while sleeping. Sometimes I think people have way too much time on their hands and are awfully spoiled. Too bad they couldn't volunteer in a hospital or something to bring them down to earth. Again, leaves disintegrate.

Just curious but how do you do that? Seems like it would be fantastic for growing vegetables and such

I have lived in communities offering that service. Also where leaf burning was allowed (since out-lawed in both of those that did allow burning while I was there).

Now I mulch them with my mower And run the sprinklers after to wet eveything down. If your soil is healthy, the matter will break down very quickly, adding even more organic matter to the soil which improves the health of the soil (a decent lawn begins with healthy soil).

Bonus is that it is quicker, ceaper and easier than raking.
