The Situation:
I've identified "Louise" as the daughter of "Rose" when she is (more likely) the daughter of "Kate" ...
1) I ask "how to move a branch within a tree" within Ancestry --
and they talk about 20 OTHER things but not the question asked. (see below)

2) I ask "how to move a branch within a tree" within Google --
and get some directions... but they miss the target as well (see example below)

As lamented before: Vague Incomplete and Misleading seems to be the norm.
- - -

Today's New Question:

How do I MOVE the "Louise" branch over to Kate ...
-- along with everyone else attached to or descended from Louise ...
-- and NOT have to go back and tweak/edit/delete/change/re-enter every detail ???

What is the best most reliable kludge to achieve this ??
Thanks.

I have switched relationships in Ancestry a number of times (due to identical names) but there was never a whole, multi-generational branch involved.

Go into "edit relationship" for Louise, remove Rose as her mother, and attach Kate as her mother instead. Everyone descended from Louise will still be descended from Louise - or in other words, everyone descended from Louise will "move" with her.

The problem is that you were searching for the wrong thing, you don't want to move a whole ancestral branch, you just want to edit one relationship: https://support.ancestry.com/s/artic...ships-in-Trees

Disconnecting wrong relationships
- From any page on Ancestry®, click the Trees tab and select a tree.
- In the tree, click on the person whose relationship you want to change. To find someone in your tree, click the Tree Search menu in the top-right corner and type in a name in panel that appears, then click that name at the bottom of the panel.
- In the menu that appears after clicking on a person, click Profile.
- In the top-right corner, click Edit and select Edit Relationships.
- Next to a relationship you want to disconnect, click the X on the right side. If you'll be establishing a different relationship between the two people you're detaching from one another, or if you’re attaching both people to different relationships, note the names of the people being detached so you can find them in your tree and connect a relationship to them after disconnecting the wrong relationship.
- Click Remove.

Reattaching people
- From the page in the last step, select a relationship to add. My Account Options
- Type the name of someone in your tree in the find a person field.
- Select their name from the drop-down menu and click Save.

Everyone descended from Louise will still be descended from Louise -
(so) everyone descended from Louise will "move" with her.
Sounds reasonable.

This is where I get my back up because UNDERSTANDING this distinction isn't made clear
and an "osmosis" for details shouldn't be expected of newbies. Hell, it isn't even hinted at.
And having only one 'how to' after 30+ views... doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

My reluctance to dive in is because when similar was attempted before it blew up on me.
Forced me to repeat about 10 'connections' .. this branch has many more.

I'll copy & print your post.
Thanks.

I had a similar unfortunate experience before I figured it out.

But -- I recently decided to split my main tree into two - one for me and one for my wife's ancestry. I included both lines because I was making the tree for my daughter, but now it is too big to easily manage. So, I duplicated my main tree and then went about deleting people from both trees thinking I was narrowing it down to the right people. Apparently not. Now I have ghost people that I deleted that are floating around but not connected to my main tree.
