I moved from Oregon to Hawaii and the cost of food is higher, but we spend almost nothing on clothes, zero on heat and don't need air conditioners. The place I live is rural and low rent (on an erupting volcano). Property taxes here are MUCH lower.
The cost of living in year round warm climates are significantly more expensive than those of colder/4 season climates.
For instance, I live in the Bay Area, a decent normal single family home is anywhere from $800K-$1.5 million. Where as a place like Minneapolis, which is an amazing place, I could get a similar home for $150K-$300K.
I'll buy some winter clothes anyday to avoid a ridiculous rip off such as California, hence why I'll be leaving before long.
The Bay Area should not be considered a warm climate by any stretch of the imagination. Didn't Mark Twain say the coldest winter of his life life was the summer he spent in San Francisco? Warmer places are cheaper because you need less.

That would not be the case if I lived down south. I'd sweat through at least three outfits a day. I hate the heat.

I guess if you're used to 80-90 year round sure, but where I'm at (30 minutes from SF) it never gets below 50-60, to me that's warm.
I think it is cold in ABQ in winter, but I just wear the same summer clothes under a heavy coat.
