Hello! I currently live in central Pennsylvania. My husband and I are looking to relocate. The trouble is deciding where. We are considering up near Portland Maine.

I'd like somewhere with:

1. All four seasons – I want a white Christmas and summers that are warm enough to swim.
2. Summers are not humid!
3. No really big cities like Philadelphia or NYC.
4. Somewhere that is crunchy.
5. Some place with great restaurants, shopping, local events, and lots of things to do.
6. No deserts (must have green).
7. The less pollution the better.
8. Lots of outdoor activities.
9. Near the ocean or lake (jet ski, boat, swim)
10. Good schools.
11. Low crime.
12. States we won't consider: California, Alaska, any really southern states for the humidity, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

I'm not really sure what you mean by good shopping and entertainment, but up near the Adirondacks might be an option if you didn't have to worry about jobs too much.

If you do, maybe eastern PA near New Hope.

I would recommend Western Massachusetts towns like Pittsfield, North Adams, Northampton, Amherst or Holyoke.

Ithaca NY... Visit Ithaca, NY - Official Site for Ithaca and Tompkins County

Another NY location while not as crunchy that may work is Plattsburgh across Lake Champlain from Burlington: Plattsburgh, NY | Official Website

There is also the possibility of say a community near Rochester or Buffalo due to their proximity to Great Lakes. Brighton in the Rochester area came to mind and perhaps parts of Amherst outside of Buffalo.

Asheville definitely comes to mind. While it can be humid in the summer, the higher elevations around town are not. Charlottesville, VA could also fit the bill.
