There's a reason some places cost a lot more than others. Some places are simply a lot nicer than others and there's nothing wrong with trying to live in a nice place.
Ok, but sounds like he doesn't have the means to maintain a decent life there? It's not just him now, it's his family, his children.

If he can make it, more power to him. There's a reason why Denver is more expensive than Beaumont, I get that.

The thing is that there are very nice places in Upstate NY as well, but this sounds more like a matter of affordability or what one can get at a certain price tag or budget.

We rent a little one bedroom apartment right now which is very small, I’ve definitely outgrown it these past few years with the kids getting bigger. However unless I work 7 days a week and burn out I can’t get us anything bigger in Orange County. The going rate is 2900 for a 2 bedroom.

This seems like quite cheap rent for 2 bedroom in South OC. I think this means that if the landlord changes their mind and either raised rent close to the average or you needed to find a new place, then you are going to be really flat out screwed if you find it's already a struggle at $2,900. On the other hand, if you think the rent situation is very stable where it won't change much for as long as you're willing to stay, and you're willing to stay in it, then maybe it's worth keeping.

Otherwise, you seem to have a very good out of this situation especially if you go for a more interesting and better part of Central New York and you're looking at an improvement in earnings. You still haven't really said much about whether and how much better the financial condition of taking over the family business would be (is it more money? Is it a lot more money?), where in Central New York would be options for you, and what it is that you and your family are into or trying to avoid. There are very few details here, so I don't know how much help you can really get that'd be useful.

Yes 2900 for a two bedroom sounds great for that location.

No offense to Upstate NY, there ain't no Dana Point there. There's no Dana Point in the Mid-Atlantic either, and obviously tastes differ, but I know where I'd wanna be on a January day.

Definitely tastes differ. I think Dana Point is no bueno. Even January is no good. It's sort of near nightmarish sort of suburbia to me, and it's getting even worse with the only good things about it being developed over. It's revolting to me, but as you say, obviously tastes differ.

Dana Point isn't even my favorite place in Southern California, but it just was a place he cited in his environment. It's more a general comment on California coastal locations. The natural environment is the kind of pretty that "Northerners" such as myself tend to associate with childhood vacation nostalgia.

Obviously tastes differ but I think there's definitely majority and minority views. Given by the nation's persistent population push south and west over the last 80 years, I think it's safe to say the majority of people find something in those locales that's immensely appealing compared to locations in the Northeast and Midwest.

Didn't say there are, but that still doesn't mean that there aren't similar types of communities in terms of metrics in Upstate NY(which there are). That is more of my point and tastes vary, as mentioned.

For all we know, the OP may like or consider places like Skaneateles, Cazenovia, Clinton, the Fayetteville-Manlius area, parts of New Hartford, Onondaga Hill, Radisson in Lysander, etc. Those are just in Central(Upstate) NY and there are others in the region. It may be a matter of scale, but in terms of metrics, you can find similar places and I mean with the same or similar incomes, educational attainments, etc. as those CA communities. Even if they aren't the same, the metric can be relative to say cost of living in terms of income.

Just to be clear, as this was mentioned by another poster in another thread when I was just making a simple point about homes in the $400k homes thread, but this isn't to say one is better than the other either. Some of this may be a matter of research or knowing what is in each area.

Recently my parents asked me if I’d like to take over our family owned business, which would be in a very busy area however - boring with not much going on. As the father of a family I feel it is the best choice considering in central New York a 4 bedroom house is just 275-400,000 .. where as anywhere is Orange County you will be paying upwards of 1.5-3 million. Or you rent an apartment for 3000 a month. I love it here but I feel financially and for my children’s future the move makes sense. Has anyone done this move? What are your thoughts?
