Georgia teenagers who will soon be getting behind the wheel will need to know about a new law going into effect this summer.

Starting on July 1, “Joshua’s Law” will require 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds to take a safety course before they can get their license..."

Not a bad idea, but unless the state comes up with money to pay for the $250 courses for the teens, many of them won't be able to afford it, so they will just wait until they turn 18 to get their driver's license. Which means they will just be untrained inexperienced 18 year old drivers instead of untrained inexperienced 17 year old drivers. The law just doesn't go far enough.

It is? Where? I never had to fill out paperwork and get background checked to buy milk.

Georgia has no law regulating gun shows or requiring background checks on gun purchasers at gun shows. In addition, Georgia law explicitly prohibits any county or municipal corporation, by zoning or by ordinance, resolution, or other enactment, from regulating gun shows in any manner.

Really, I hope they just teach them one thing the whole time: No, you don't need to change lanes right now! Ok, let's not change more than one lane at a time! Oh, you want to change lanes, make sure you look and put on your blinker first!

Driver's ed needs to be required before anyone of any age gets a license. The state should pay for it.

No....a one time "new licensee" fee paid by at the time the learners permit is issued should cover it. Why should the state cover it?

If it was up to me, driver's licenses would be fazed out. For one thing, because I believe driving is a right, not a privilege, as the government likes to call it.

In place of driver's licenses I would make extensive driver's education a high school graduation requirement. Goal being to make sure that virtually every single person would be a fully trained competent driver, whether they want to be or not. It probably wouldn't be a perfect solution, but it couldn't be worse then the system we have now.
