Hello,

I was reading this list of colleges and universities in Georgia. Note that the returned list contains schools not in Georgia for some reason. I filtered those out.

For the schools that had graduation statistics, the graduation rates are telling. I sorted them in descending order.

Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta - 90%
University of Georgia, Athens - 86%
Spelman College, Atlanta - 75%
Agnes Scott College, Decatur - 73%
Berry College, Mount Berry - 69%
The Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah - 69%
Mercer University, Macon - 65%
Georgia College, Milledgeville - 63%
Clayton State University, Morrow - 54%
Chamberlain University College of Nursing, Sandy Springs - 59%
Morehouse College, Atlanta - 53%
Brenau University, Gainesville - 52%
Wesleyan College, Macon - 50%
Georgia Southern University, Statesboro - 49%
Oglethorpe University, Brookhaven - 46%
Piedmont University, Demorest - 46%
Toccoa Falls College, Toccoa - 45%
University of West Georgia, Carrollton - 45%
Life University, Marietta - 44%
Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta - 42%
Young Harris College, Young Harris - 42%
Emmanuel University, Franklin Springs - 41%
La Grange College, La Grange - 41%
University of North Georgia Dahlonega Campus, Dahlonega - 41%
Augusta University, Augusta - 39%
Reinhart University, Waleksa - 39%
Truett McConnell University, Cleveland - 39%
Shorter University, Rome - 39%
Valdosta Sate University, Valdosta - 39%
Georgia Southwestern State University, Americus - 38%
Luther Rice College & Seminary, Stonecrest - 37%
Point University, West Point - 37%
Columbus State University, Columbus - 36%
Fort Valley Sate University, Fort Valley - 35%
Thomas University (Forbes Campus), Thomasville - 33%
Dalton State College, Dalton - 31%
South University, Savannah - 29%
Savannah State University, Savannah - 28%
Albany State University, Albany - 27%
Middle Georgia State University, Macon - 25%
Brewton-Parker College, Mount Vernon - 19%
Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville - 19%
American Intercontinental University, Atlanta - 18%
Devry University, Decatur - 16%
Strayer University, Chamblee - 15%
Paine College, Augusta - 13%

School graduation rates broken down by decile:

91-100% - 1 school
81-90% - 1 school
71-80% - 2 schools
61-70% - 4 schools
51-60% - 4 schools
41-50% - 12 schools
31-40% - 12 schools
21-30% - 4 schools
11-20% - 6 schools

These graduation rates just seem really low. I'm sure there are a variety of reasons students don't graduate, but to me this is very concerning. This does not paint a good picture of higher learning.

Many of the low ones are the regional schools. There are a LOT of young people who begin taking classes after high school because they just don't know what they want to do and it is easy to get money to do it. Many decide they don't want or need a degree. For others, life gets in the way: marriage, children, etc.

I bet the graduation rate for those entering school with a clear purpose and goal is much higher than the rate for those I would say are, "killing time" trying to figure out a path.

One big issue is that it is too easy to get money to go to school. Lots of people who weren't very successful in high school borrow thousands to go to college....why? If one barely graduated high school, why do they think college is going to be better?

Of course, as a society, we don't expect much out of young people until after 25 or so, so we collectively have created part of the problem. It used to be that after high school, you went to college or got a job. Now, adolescence has been extended well into one's 20s and it is fine to live off mom and dad for a decade after high school. It is sad, but that's a whole other issue. My point is that this "extended adolescence" is probably driving a lot of these numbers. Lots and lots of young people are just going to school to do something rather than going with a purpose.

It is or isn't as low as you think, depending how you look at it. It is more typical than many realize.

Those statistics are typically tracking entry level 1st year students only and their success over a number of years at getting a bachelor's degree. The problem is many aren't seeking to get a bachelor's degree to begin with.

Many people will go to a local regional school to get credit as a High school students or before transferring to a larger school and were never really intended to stay to graduate from that college. Many have an intention of getting an associate's to work as a government clerk or something related.

It also doesn't filter out people that were attending a school for a specific purpose to get a certain class, skill, or accreditation to advance their work vs. getting a complete bachelor's degree. Some of these schools have CNA programs, first responder classes, skill courses for trade jobs, but is something what is beyond the local technical college.

There's definitely some ambiguity. This link shows Morris Brown's rate is the same as that of Georgia College (62% - 63%).

This link says Morris Brown's graduation rate is 5%.
