Absolutely not! Why even ask this. It is very useful tool rather than deadly force.

However, when your main weapon is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

When the police are called, it is usually because someone is upset about some aspect of an individual's behavior. When an individual is drunk or unruly, (or it is a domestic issue) the situation can really escalate. The police will kill someone they perceive as a threat. Sometimes, they kill people who are not a threat.

Suppose we have another type of organization to respond to low to mid level calls for help? This way, bums will not be killed for urinating in the bushes, and couples can resolve domestic issues without getting shot. I see a citizens corps (CITVOLS) composed of unarmed volunteers (teachers, doctors, who are paid for their services, or who get property/state tax breaks. They will have a different kind of uniform, and citizens will decide the scope of their duties prior to establishing the group. The important thing is that they are of the community.

The police and state and local organizations need to be part of the national discourse on solving the issue of the role of the police, and part of the solution. A framework to protect and help the people should be the outcome of this effort. A Police Force is still relevant, but it is only one option -part of the solution.
So, how do you “sort” through “domestic disputes” and determine when to send a civilian volunteer vs a police officer in order to “de-escalate”?

Domestic disputes is one of the more dangerous calls the police are dreading- you don’t know if the person is drugged, having an assault rifle and/or ready to die or don’t care if they do..

In a nearby considered very safe community in the safest part of the country a young well trained police officer was shot to death during a daytime while serving a warrant for a not very significant crime as the first response from the offender..they were both the same race..( just to put it out there for everyone obsessed with the “racism” of police)
Would you have sent “a volunteer doctor”?

The guy peeing in the bushes could be out of his mind on drugs and could literally eat your face out-
a danger to public - to you - going by innocently
They have an enormous strength sometimes and even shot - still could hurt you- that is why the self defense - courses train you to do 3 shots- in a specific order..

Your “feel good, let’s all be friends and kind and understanding to each other “ideas are good on paper or posting in forums..

Very naive and removed from a reality of what is going on out there...in the real world.
Not that we should not keep trying to find a solution...
