Perhaps over time by treating drug addiction as an illness rather than a crime actual crimes will go down and then we won't need as many police. At that time less police funding would make sense.
There are not enough violent crimes to justify such a large extensive police force though...thats part of the problem, its why they need laws like drug laws...in which ALOT of people are willing to break those laws time after time.

Violent crime is not that 'reliable' or consistent.

As Ive said before, without drug laws, US law enforcement would become largely irrelevant and slide into obscurity.

Not all criminals are idiots, and they develop more sophisticated criminal activity and techniques. The police need to stay ahead of this. These fools that want to defund police are not realizing what affect this would have. It's really an insult to anybody that believes in law & order. The truth is if these foolish people take money from the police, there is going to be many more vigilantes all across the U.S. and people are going to take the law into their own hands. People will wish they never defunded the police. They will not realize how good they had it, when this happens...

Meh, not 1 study confirms more police equates to crime being deterred.
As I've mentioned previously, when 38% of your entire city budget goes to policing; alternatives must be explored.
We don't need them driving around all day w/nothing to do, and other countries don't spend nearly this amount of tax revenue; which is better utilized for social programs or education.

We need professional police officers. Seems like these days professionalism has been lost. You never realize professionalism till its gone. So we need professionals, we need to think and not react. We need Police officers to diffuse the situation and give citations when needed. Not drag people off to jail on a whim. Police need to remember we are innocent to proving guilty. I also think adding social workers to work with the police is a great idea. Mental illness should not be handled by the police alone. I also agree with the landlord who mentioned affordable housing. Affordable housing is important but so is teaching some people how to balance a budget and save money. Landlord stories in lower income neighborhoods are all the same no good credit, tenants spending money on parties, huge tvs, …... instead of paying rent. I was always taught rent first, save, then spend.
Lets educate to elevate. Lets listen to each other before reacting.

Tell me how you feel about the knife in your chest. Are you ready to let go of your anger towards the person ransacking your home at the moment?

Who said anyone but the police would respond? "Defund the police' is about freeing up police time, so that they CAN respond in a timely manner to precisely that type of call.

[Moderator cut]

The police are supposed to be about crimefighting. Let them fight crime, and respond to crime-related distress calls. Vs. devoting their time to doing "wellness checks", responding to calls of a neighbor dancing in the street in front of his home, calls about someone jogging, or about a homeless person behaving erratically or having a seizure.

After 144 replies in this thread we seem to be seeing the same assertions and rebuttals being continually made. Which suggests that this topic has run its course and that there is nothing new to be debated here. Thread closed.
