This article by Shannon Mattern was praised as being one of the best long-form articles of the year.

So I looked it up.

And I'm sharing it.

Fountain Society
The humble drinking fountain can tell us much about a society’s attitudes towards health, hygiene, equity, and virtue, and about its understanding of public goods and civic responsibilities.

A pertinent quote would help.
As to the fountain water quality issue (aka municipal)... that all depends on how good is it.

WE have a drinking fountain in my 55+ community here in Tucson and we are not on Tucson water, we have our own well and the water is tested periodically, and it's delicious to drink.

In the SW, there should be more drinking fountains, especially in summer, by the homeless and everyone.

In our city of 65,000 I don't recall ever seeing a drinking fountain, even in the local parks. They are not needed, since everyone carries around their refillable metal water bottles. The only homeless here are when a local church hosts a tent city for a few months.
