Both msa's saw healthy growth over the last year. Greenville comes in at 920,477 an increase of 13,449 over a year. Spartanburg comes in at 319,785 an increase of 5,648. I still see these msa's being recombined in the future as they once were. Greenville's growth has sprawled across the county line. Greenville remains the state's most populated county and msa. All data can be found here.
anytime i search msa related posts it's usually you starting them - i enjoy speculating about this also...
the urbanization between gville/sburg along i85 has increased drastically since your 2012 post. i know quite a few people that travel from gvile to sburg for work and vice versa.
The most current estimated numbers for 2021 are Greenville County 541,384 and Spartanburg County 331,081. Greenville county adds Anderson County 207,090, Pickens County 130,202 and Laurens County 68,699 when they tally up there Metro numbers. That is where you get 947,375. Spartanburg's metro is usually only Spartanburg County. But I have seen counts where they have added Union County 27,300 which is struggling with population growth. That would add up to 358,381. It will be very interesting to see the new numbers in nine years. The whole upstate is exploding with growth.

when do they formally decide, 2023?
I'm not sure when they do this, but the Greenville county growth has definitely sprawled into Spartanburg county.
But Greenville and the Upstate, while the whitest region in the state traditionally, is growing the fastest in diversity than the rest of the state, by a good margin. Not just percentages, but by raw numbers. Greenville County well above everyone else in Hispanic, Asian (-York), Polynesian, and multiracial growth, and very good in African American growth. Greenville Co has only 4,000 less AA's than Charleston. White growth has slowed, but still 5th in SC.
Spartanburg as well posted very good numbers and was higher than Columbia and Charleston in Hispanic and Polynesian growth and higher than Charleston by a good margin in AA growth. Pickens actually did better than Anderson overall.
With abortion likely to be illegal in South Carolina soon, the non-white population will likely rise even faster. (Middle class and above white families will send their daughters out of state for an abortion). Crime rates will also likely rise 15-20 years from now, with more desperate "unwanted" young men around to commit crimes.
I'm not sure when they do this, but the Greenville county growth has definitely sprawled into Spartanburg county.

Yes. That's what someone said in the South Carolina forum also.
