We’re from NM, and heading East this summer to scope out possible retirement places. Greenville, Asheville and possibly Charlotte suburbs, Peachtree City, GA. Last summer we checked out The Woodlands, TX and Bentonville, AR. Anyway, we like the suburbs so we can be relaxed, and go into the city when we want, but would prefer a suburb with some shopping and a “charming” downtown area. Being from NM, charming for us means flowers, nice landscapes, outdoor dining, small lakes, etc. Huge bonus for paved bike paths, parks, less-crime, and non-chain restaurants. Budget is 500k.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

Check out Converse Heights in Spartanburg. Really charming neighborhood with big trees and sense of community, close to a rapidly revitalizing downtown with a wide variety of independently owned restaurants/shops, wine bars annd breweries and a growing network of bike/walking trails throughout the city. Several colleges, cultural arts center with little theater, symphony and the arts.

Greenville’s smaller sibling without the traffic congestion and high home prices/real estate taxes yet only 45 minutes to Greenville and 90 minutes to Charlotte.

Small city living at its best.
