I meet a couple of friends downtown almost every Thursday or Friday. We always meet at 11:00 for about 1 1/2 ours. As always, I found a 2 hr. parking space, arriving at 11:00. I went back to my truck to leave at 12:40, finding a parking ticket. The ticket for for exceeding the 2 hr. limit. I called the number on the ticket and was told I had arrived at 9:40 and the ticket was given at 12:28. I tried to explain to her there was no way. Heck, I was at home washing my car at 10:15. To make a longer story a little shorter, I had to pay the fine and then file an appeal. I have come to find out that this is happening to a lot of folks. Anyone out there had this problem? How can I prove I did not arrive until 11:00?
Anyway, be careful when parking downtown. I have a bad feeling the parking police are making up stuff to either make themselves look good or to get more money for the city. It is very discouraging, as I love my city. But, if my appeal fails, I am going to shout out from the mountaintops (social media) about this ripoff.
Related, but different problem. This week a visitor parked in a parking garage for lunch. Upon exit, their card was declined for the bill of $2.00. Upon trying again, the fee went to $3.00 (It might have just passed another hour). Card was again declined. Trying a 3rd time, the fee jumped to $7.00, the whole day rate and the ticket was retained with no way out now. Calling the attendant on the speaker provided little help - but he re-enabled the $7.00 fee without a ticket so another card could be used to finally exit.
Very frustrating to a visitor, and too weird to try to explain to someone and track down. Upon later verification, the first card had no restriction and should have worked.
I ran into a similar problem in Charleston recently.
I was unaware that adding coins beyond two hours was a waste of money because the meter kept it yet only gave you two hours.
And I and into a another tourist who was using a credit card and found out the same thing. He could keep adding money, but the meter still only gave him a basic two hours.
Nothing posted about this, just kind of a ripoff.
We just moved here from another area where we had very few parking meters.
I am told this is quite common nationwide.
Just be aware.
