One option is to take I-26 east to SC 34 in Newberry. Take SC 34 east to SC 215, then south all the way to I-26. You completely avoid the slowdowns on I-26 before the I-20 interchange and although it's a two lane road most of the way, there should be no slowdowns. It dumps you out on the east side of Columbia on I-26. We tried it the last time and saved at least 10 or 15 minutes over the last time we had taken the normal route.

Now it is nice you have QT options when traveling down 26 from the Upstate to the Midlands. A nice new QT at the Clinton exit next to a nice modern Bojangles. And QT now in Columbia.

I think the construction issues begin just past Newberry, and that alternate detour there has been suggested. Although if you can deal with the delay and stay on 26, you can stop at the nice Columbiana Mall right beside the highway at the Harbison Rd. exit. And I always stop for a burger at the Rush's on Harbison just down from the mall.

Also, if you listen to local radio the GSP and Charlotte stations can be heard just past Newberry and begin to drop off by the Chapin exit in Lexington County due to Columbia stations now interfering on the same frequencies. On AM you can still get WBT from Charlotte on 11.10AM if you like news/talk radio. A Columbia signal overtakes 98.9 from the Upstate as well as WBT on 99.3.

That QT isnt exactly new, been there at least 2 years now. But much nicer than the other 2 stations there.
