Open casket vs. Closed casket.....price difference

Does anyone know what the difference in price would be......A frugal friend of mine wanted a closed casket funeral.....One funeral parlor wants $12K for the whole closed casket deal....Just about the same price for an open casket funeral.....I would think there would be ALOT less work for the undertaker for a closed casket funeral.....Anybody here with first hand experience know what the average percentage difference should be? Is $12k a ripoff for a closed casket job?

I think people are probably grieving here and this post is out of line. Your friend should call different funeral homes for different quotes.

No more "out of line" than the threads about giving money at wakes, the high price of obits, etc. This question doesn't strike me as improper.

My friend died suddenly on Wednesday. I'm grieving for him.....He had no money to speak of because he gave it all to charities.....He has no family left....God Bless him..!

I am sorry for the loss of your friend, Chaffee. IMO that sounds like a lot of money for a closed casket. My dad's was open, Mom too and they were nowhere near that expensive.

I'm very sorry for your loss, Chaffee. A sudden death is very hard.
I can't offer much help, because my parents, my in-laws and my husband were all cremated. My parents' services had them in a casket, but it was "rented" for the service. After the service, they were cremated. I know the cremation cost them $850.00 in 1989, and my in-laws were about $1500 in 1997. My husband was $2200.00 in 2009. Why a casket would cost almost $10K more, is kind of perplexing. Escpecially when you've bought a buial plot, and paid for the services of a minister, organist, and so on...funerals are pretty expensive, I guess.
You have to see an itemized list of charges to determine how much each 'extra' is.
And, believe me, there are a lot of what the funeral homes consider usual and customary that can be dispensed with.
Is your friend wanting a private viewing for immediate family or a completely closed casket funeral? My mother had pre-planned arrangements that she'd purchased 20 years ago. However, just prior to her recent death, she made it clear she wanted a private viewing for immediate family, but closed casket for the general public.
For a completely closed casket, I would think there would be no need for cosmetology services, which would slightly reduce the cost. My mom paid approximately $3,700 20 years ago and, at today's prices, would've been right around $9,000. Depending on the type of casket, limousine, and other expenses, $12,000 doesn't seem that far-fetched.
