It's a giant ******* hassle and you have to jump through numerous hoops.

I was in an endless circle with NY, where my mother was born, and CA, where she passed away. CA wanted her birth cert to get the death cert and NY wanted the death cert and a family history document to get her birth cert. This after I'd sent everything they asked for (from the website) and which was returned to me, with my check, because they wanted more.

I finally gave up since I was apparently the only one in my family who cared. I was trying to do some genealogy on her side of the family. Wish someone had saved these documents.

Best of luck to you.

As far as geneology, I have shared copies of older death certificates with many loosely related people. Not usually for those death certificates for more recently deceased people. I mean, if someone contacted me and told me why they wanted it, I might consider it, if there was a good reason.
