Not asking because I don't think people need guns, but its more of a how many is enough to get you by in good times and bad. I used to have three safes full but I sold off a lot because they owned me I did not own them. Took me three days to take them out clean and put rigs grease on them. I miss some but I got over it. I now am down to one safe. There are really only three or four guns I really use the rest are for SHTF scenarios. I feel like Ammo is more important than a lot of guns that without ammo are clubs.

There was a tragic cave-in at my bunker so I had to switch over to archery tackle

How many guns does one individual need?

However many they can afford and find pleasure in owning. How's that??

Depends on how many different things you need to do with guns. If you hunt different sized game at different distances, then everything from a .22LR to a .375 H&H Mag rifles plus a variety of shotguns could be "needed"... so... anywhere from 1 to 20. My personal goal is a collection of a .22LR, .44 Mag Carbine, .30-30, .243 Win, and .308 Win rifles, plus a couple of 12-ga shotguns. That would cover any type of game I ever see myself hunting at any reasonable range. Add in a few light-recoil training guns for kids, and a semi-auto .22LR and .223 for plinking. Add in handguns/shotguns for self defense while traveling, on the hiking trail, or at home and you'll "need" several more types. Add in a variety of SHTF scenarios, and the "need" goes up even farther. [Note: I don't have anywhere near this collection of weaponry]

On the other hand, if you only plink at targets, hunt deer, plus self defense, then 1 rimfire rifle, 1 centerfire rifle, 1 shotgun, and 1 handgun.

as many as I feel necessary to protect myself and my family, plus a few extra for when friends come over.

Well, who knows?

I mainly use a Browning Silver 12ga.now but I sometimes like to use my 16ga. BPS. My youngest son likes it and also uses a 12ga. BPS.

I also have an O/U which doesn't get much use but my oldest son will sometimes grab it. His younger sister likes to kill clays with it. Her older sister has latched onto my 870.

Since I live in MD and rifles for deer are pretty much out in most of the state but I still wouldn't get rid of my 1925ish Winchester in .32 Special.

A lot of my guns are older like the Winchester and were passed down to me and will get split up, actually they already have, by the kids.
