A gun permit is not needed for any gun purchase in the 50 states. There are some odd city laws like in New York.
A concealed weapon permit is needed in most states for concealed carry. In many counties near imposible to obtain. In some states they give them away.
A firearms safety certificate is needed for hand gun purchase in many states.
I live in New Jersey.
1. We need a Firearms Identification Card to buy a gun here. (or any firearm, including, according to what I've read, BB guns, pellet guns, and SLINGSHOTS)
2. It's near impossible to get a carry permit in this state.
3. But...we can buy a handgun without training although it's an additional permit (in addition to the firearms ID card) and somewhat of a PITA to get.
Instead of a 12 gague shotgun you might consider a 20 gauge. It's smaller and has less kick. You can still get any type of ammo like the backshot mentioned above.
At close ranges it will be as good as any 12 cauge & easier to yield.
I've been watching this thread for a bit and need to put in my two cents worth.
Everybody has been recommending some really good shot guns. I would vote against it. The reason is, the normal person, in a scary situation, forgets what they are doing. i.e., they encounter a problem, they run down the hall, grab their shotgun, and then run back T-boneing themselves at the door of the bedroom. They try and run down the hall with a long shotgun across in front of them.
I would highly recommend a pistol. .357 magnum. But load it with shot. they sell shot shells for the .357 and the spread is outstanding for 20 ft. A shot gun doesn't spread til about 50 ft or better. So you'll blow a hole through anything, even your son or daughters bedroom wall. With the pistol using shot shell, the spread is really good and will down an intruder at 20 ft. But doesn't tend to go through 4 walls and enter your neighbors house.
Plus, with a little practice, I'll bet the shot shells come out and .357 FMJ go in.

Yes, more punishing then shooting a normal shotgun. With the shotgun your recoil is taken completely by your shoulder and torso. With the Judge, the entire recoil is taken by your wrist.

Hmmmm
I'd go with the Mossberg 500 - honestly it all comes down to how many shots you need loaded and the weight/length of the gun.
Have you had the chance to try each of them out yet at a range?
