Would a 22 year old be safe buying an condo and walking to the community college and working around the downtown area? Thanks. She has no desire to drive but the condo she is interested in is only a block from Harris Teeter and she is very fit. Thanks!

If you are referring to Norfolk, I would say yes. But I also recommend to my clients to speak to the police/first responders in an area they are considering. Also ask neighbors what they think of the area.
Good Luck!!

I'm so excited not to put too much of my business out there but I'm in my 30's, happily single, no kids and the first time living on my own I'll be living in VA beach area near Chic's beach! My cousin told me about GHENT area in Norfolk but the rent is kinda pricey there for my budget but I'll be working in Norfolk. Also Norfolk don't appeal to me too much as far as a place to live. It was either Chesapeake or VA Beach for me. I'm happy I'm finally am moving out of the BIG City! I have a feeling I picked a great and safe place to live. Can't wait to move in another two weeks!!

I appreciate the more current opinion. I don't see it as "complaining." but that this is his or her experience. Yours may be different. No need to call them out on it.

That said, what's your current feeling on Ghent? I, too, am "digging for years-old threads" looking for information.

Cheers!

Norfolk and Virginia Beach are apples and oranges. Norfolk is Pittsburgh and Virginia Beach is San Bernardino. They couldn't be more different.

A young person might like Norfolk because it's hipsters, it's post urban, and it's progressive. Plenty of gentrification. A young person might like Virginia Beach because it's safe, it's post suburban, meaning they're starting to build up instead of out, but hasn't lost its suburban feel, and it's family friendly. You get a ticket if you curse on the beaches in Virginia Beach. Go to the beach in Norfolk and it's a little different.

I'm both cases, you need to have your money game right if you're looking to buy. At least 350k to do it right. Any less than that you're not close to the beach, you have a 30 year old house, and you're stuck in traffic. In both cities. Ghent is cool if you like to parallel park on the street and enjoy 800 square foot apartments and roommates.
