I moved to Norfolk from Charlotte last year due to my fiance's job transfer to VB. He moved three months before me. No hes not in the military. We were told by everyone not to live or even go near Norfolk! We found a great townhouse in W Oceanview area after 6 months of looking in VB. I love it here. Every city has its ghetto as every school has its hell child. I miss Charlotte but there are no beaches or history and everybody you meet is from NY and constantly putting down the south!

I have no real opinion on Norfolk. I have enoyed it when I visit. I like the Harbor. In some ways it reminds me a mini-Baltimore. But I dont get all excited and scream "NAW-FULK ! "NAW-FULK!"

I'm glad they are re-doing Waterside. Years ago it was a nice shopping pleasure before they brought in all those restaurants. Then with Hooters and other bar-like places, it created a hangout for the 20 something crowds and just alot of trouble awakened.
I enjoy the festivities they have at Town Point Park, but other than that, it just wasn't a place to take people who were visiting the area. Looking forward to the "way that it used to be" atmosphere.

Hahaha. Oh c'mon, man. Everyone screams "NAW-FULK" at the harbor.

Well people that live outside of Norfolk in the surrounding cities consider Norfolk the Ghetto of Hampton Roads or should I say for us old timers Tidewater.

Driving almost anywhere in Norfolk you see ghetto to the left right and in front of you. Government housing sticks out like a sore thumb and I would say 1/3 the city is unemployed and living off the system. Unless your at Waterside or Ghent you better look over your shoulder during your time there.

If W Ocean View is nice then please give me more info on where to look. I have been researching whether to live in Va Beach, Hampton, NNews, or Norfolk. I hear so many things about all. I love the area but am really not sure. I do like Yorktown but thats more expensive. Although, it has a nice beach area and pretty close to everything. Prices seem to be more in Va Beach and York. Thanks

Because it's a hole.

I hate going to Norfolk. I avoid it as much as possible. I would much rather live in VA Beach than Norfolk just based on the appearances of them. Norfolk is a "city" where as VA Beach is set up more like neighborhoods.

Someone mentioned Chesapeake Blvd. WOW! We've driven between 64 and Shore Drive probably 2 or 3 times tops. I avoid that area like the plague.

I don't care for a "city" look or feel, so it wouldn't be for me in the least. I dread when I have to go there occasionally for work. Parking alone is a nightmare.

Where did you get 1/3 from? Just curious.

Freefreq,

I have to agree with xGrendelx here, Im the first one to bash this area, but 1/3 unemployed? Come on now. Even though a large number of people are employed in low wage jobs or underemployed, Hampton Roads does a tremendous job with keeping people actually in some form of job, and is consistantly ahead of the national numbers in unemployment.

The majority of those people you feel are "living off the system" are actually the working poor, and those bad areas in Norfolk are the only places the working poor in this area can afford to live any longer.
