I'm going to be transferring out of Eastern State Hospital soon and the transitional group home they're trying to put me in just had to leave their location in Colonial Williamsburg and purchased or rented a home in Park Place, Norfolk.

I am from Williamsburg and lived in a decent neighborhood on the Border of Norge/Toano. I am not used to living in areas where the crime area is notably high. I read posts on this website that said Park Place is an area to avoid, and one of the girls I'm going there with is from Cheasapeake and said the area is sketchy.

Is this still the case in 2021?

Not as dangerous as it once was, but still no place to let your guard down.

It's not as bad as some of the surrounding areas.

Park Place itself is nice my only issue is that the streets are too narrow for my tastes and I don't like having to park on the street, as is the case with a lot of neighborhoods in Norfolk, due to the age of the city and how it was built out. Is it sketchy, sure, but a lot of the city is there are more suburban places to live if that is what makes you more comfortable. Park Place is a very urban area. I used to travel through it a lot living in Lafayette and Ghent as they have a car wash I like to go to out there and of course the Food Lion, when I did not want to go to the one on Tidewater as their parking lot always floods. Not to mention the fact that I can actually get a parking space there.

Honestly I think Ghent is going to encompass Park Place eventually, so far as how that neighborhood works. It will always be Park Place, but it will undergo gentrification. Ghent ran out of real estate a long time ago and it needs to either build up or grow out. Growing out is a lot cheaper. Building higher would require imminent domain and it is just cheaper to kick out the poor. It'll still be a Black neighborhood just at a higher income level.

All things considered if the City has their way Norfolk will be gentrified all the way to Old Dominion University. If it had the money it would have done it a long time ago. Once Norfolk takes over downtown and tells the poor to gtfo they are pushing towards East Beach/Oceanview (which is already gentrified). It is just a matter of time. If nothing else they'll push towards the river and it will be, whatever it will be at that point. A lot of people are going to make their way back into Portsmouth and Suffolk. Better to do it now and take advantage of these low prices before it gets out of hand here as well. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake are already done no point in moving over there.
