So I'm looking to relocate from Richmond and deciding between VA Beach, or waiting patiently for something in my price range in the OBX. But while I'm deciding I was curious. Two of the areas in VA Beach I'm considering are up around the Lake Smith area where I've seen a few houses I liked and like that it's near the bay, but also a few townhouses down in the Dam Neck area. I was curious though, any opinions on which of those two areas is better in regards to quick access to the beach? I don't want to go to the oceanfront area, too busy and seems to have gone downhill quite a bit. With up near Chic's Beach I've heard it gets super congested and is really tough finding parking, or you can go west towards Ocean View but the areas are dicey in some places. But down in Dam Neck, unless you're going further south to Sandbridge I'm not sure of any close spots for non-military as the only place I know of is the Dam Neck annex I believe it is. I just want to be close to the beach, dammit!

From Dam Neck, it depends on how close you consider Croatan to be, as that's pretty much your only other option.

Ah that's what I was kind of worried about with Dam Neck. So being non-military it's either Croatan or Sandbridge. Honestly even a 15 or 20 minute drive would be better than the 2 and a half hour drive I currently have. Guess it really just comes down to which area I'd prefer living in.

It's much closer to a 10 minute drive from the "Dam Neck Corner" area, maybe 15 from Red Mill/Strawbridge. Even that is only because you have to ride through the residential area of Croatan at 25 mph to get to the parking lot. General Booth Boulevard is a fairly easy drive once you get past Dam Neck Road/Oceana Boulevard and clear of all the commuting/longer-distance traffic.

I'd live in the Lake Smith area, if you could afford it. It's an older part of the city, and close to the Bay, which is very nice. It's a really nice location. My Aunt lives in that area Lake Smith, and it's my favorite part of Va. Beach up and over to Chick's Beach and Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel area.
