You don't get to stop paying property tax on your home once that's paid off, either.

Virginia's personal property (vehicles) tax is the 2nd highest in the USA.

One way or another they will get the $. In UT for example, its a state imposed "vehicle property assessment fee" in addition to the registration fees. https://tax.utah.gov/forms/pubs/pub-23.pdf. MD does it in a similar way. In MD, the personal property tax on vehicles is not a local tax, but a tax administered by the MD DMV.

Consider also the gas tax. In VA its $0.28; in UT its $0.364; in MD its $0.427.

Let me get this straight, we get to pay personal property tax on a paid-off car for perpetuity while we own it here in Virigina Beach?

Don't you just love that Va Beach car tax? Kinda like the storm water management "fee".

Kind of curious what Virginians pay for a car tag.
Mississippi doesn't tax personal property, but our car tags can cost many hundreds unless you drive an older car.
Our car is 15 years old, so we pay 35$/year. Pickup is 33 years old, so no charge.

Awww..yes we have that in Kentucky too.
It doesn't matter if your car is paid off or not.
I guess its a win win situation for them.

You pay taxes on the income you make (federal, state, and local, social security etc.) then you pay taxes on things you buy from your money that has already been taxed, pay taxes on utilities, then when your car and home are paid off you pay taxes on them till you die. Where does it end?

The VA system is a bit cattywampus. Below is a link to fees including registration fees. Some jurisdictions have additional fees. Registration fees are different than personal property taxes, sales taxes and so forth. https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/sites/d...rms/dmv201.pdf

I never knew I paid a whole $2 every year for my motorcycle endorsement. I register my vehicles every two years and I think I pay around $75 per.

Be happy they don't require a car inspection twice a year like they did in the 70s. Sheesh!

Even worse, before computers, was when in April each year, white license plates were exchanged for black license plates. A person paid their tax and was given the new color for the year. The line went on and on and on.
