Detroit!

I am from Michigan..... Detroit...........Michigan............

Detroit Files For Bankruptcy Protection: The Facts, The Figures, And The Fallout - Forbes

The city is broke.

And if there is one thing for sure is that the city of Honolulu will not go broke. Not with the increasing amounts of tourists that come here. I found out from an old co-worker back in Michigan that the place I worked at for over four years before coming hereis now closing....... And they are closing the chemist department totally.

DEARBORN: Double Eagle steel plant to close by spring 2015; job losses to be determined - News - Press and Guide

So I am here in Hawaii and I have been here for a year and a half going on 2 years. I have a good paying, fun and exciting job, my wife has tenure now as a school teacher and things are great!

So I will never go back to Michigan, because the bankruptcy will ripple thru Michigan's economy and it will greatly effect the unemployment numbers in Michigan

I will never go back to Michigan or Detroit, because there is nothing to go back to..........

And me and my wife despite all the people saying moving here was a bad idea. It turned out to be one of the wisest decisions me and my wife made..

I think this part says it all. Actually a big part of enjoying living in Hawaii is to have a decent job. Your situation is something that doesn't apply to everyone. A lot of people who move here just don't realize how much the cost of living is. I think if you and your wife didn't have your current jobs, you'd be looking at things a lot differently.

I would offer a caution about assuming that something will never happen, could never happen. Witness the sugar industry, witness the pineapple industry. I may be wrong, but it seems that the economic base of Honolulu is a bit narrow, and one catastrophic event, Hurricane or similar, might do the unthinkable and sink the unsinkable.
