Thanks for the update. Please update us further as I have a personal interest. I've had a disability in force for ten years. Four years ago SSA granted permanent disability status to me. While I have continued to pay the monthly premium, I haven't filed a claim. I've procrastinated and fully aware I had a responsibility to file in a timely manner. But that's precisely the kind of mental processing that resulted in my disability. I am now in a position to finally get the ball rolling, and intend to get to this gruelling task. My medical records are 18" thick.

Good Luck.

Does your policy have an offset for any SSDI payments? When I worked, my employer's LT disability only paid the difference.

Good question. And I don't know the answer as I haven't delved into the policy or made the inquiry. It wouldn't be a issue in my case, based on what I was earning when working vs. monthly govt stipend. I'ts such a daunting task, I'll probably leave it to a atty. that specializes in disability claims. You want a hoot? I was a insurance claims adjuster for over thirty years. I just can't deal with this stuff anymore.

Most employer disability does not cover your full salary. Possibly 80% if you were high on the totem pole in your company. Mine covered 60%, people above me got 70%, further up the chain 80%. All were offset by any SSDI payments, after six months. Somehow, the insurance people believed one could achieve SSDI status in that time. From everything I've read, it takes two years, not six months.

As an aside, since 60% was too low for me as I had virtually no income tax liability and either took home or saved most of my income in tax-sheltered vehicles, I and a few others in my workplace also carried additional disability insurance besides our employer's. I never considered at the time that a private policy might further offset the employer's policy, but I'll bet they had that written in there, too.
