Pharmaceutical commercials, yup gotta laugh at those, dang near as bad as the medical forums on the net, commercial comes on and if they give a few symptoms of which it could probably fit anything, some folks go to thinking hmmm I better ask doc if I could have that it might help me.

Number three is steady gaining speed, I’ll call them the low lifers, go to docs (doctor shopping), make up ailments so there is no true way to confirm nor reject their claim for pain or what ever drug they’re after, they walk out with script or scripts, then sell the stuff by the bottle or pill, some claiming it’s the only way they can help pay bills is by doing this, most using gov programs that pay for the meds, well uhhh yea ok I’m sure the judge will buy that one too.

I added a fourth since it’s associated with the problem, drugs that are used for certain conditions are being written for far too many other things the drug was not manufactured nor intended for, and while were bashing the drug companies, drug companies misrepresenting or misleading in there pre FDA clinical trials.

All in all pills are becoming an everyday acceptance in our lives, for those that truly need them for their medical conditions yes they can help tremendously in ones daily living but many times for some they are clearly not needed not to mention the adverse drug interactions some can cause also, cost wise drugs have been rising in price for years which accounts for some of the increase in sales dollars, research costs are astronomical but they have been given an open door somewhat to those increases also.
Usually I am anti drug company but I have to disagree with you on something here. There have been several drugs that have been tested and approved by the FDA for one condition but once on the market have proven to be better suited for another disease state. Maybe this is why drugs are being prescribed for ailments that they were not necessarily designed to treat.

Ritalin was originally tested as an antihistamine. Viagra was tested as a heart med. Wellbutrin went through drug trials as an antideppressant but is also used as a smoking cessation drug. Clonidine is a heart medication but is used regularly for Autistic children.

The other points I will give you hands down!

The funniest restless leg syndrome commercial says, "the most prevalent of many side affects for this medication include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach ache." What cracks me up about it is that the pill relaxes your legs and you sit down with your legs so relaxed but then as soon as they are relaxed you have to get up and go use the bathroom. Its so dumb, I would rather have restless legs sitting down then have super relaxed legs when I need to get up to throw up!

Have you seen the drug commercial that warns that compulsive gambling may be a side effect???? Or an erection that lasts more than 4 hours?? Or explosive bowel syndrome? Uh, no thanks! I have enough problems of my own without inheriting one from a crappy drug!

I'd rather have the jumpy legs too! lol
I started watching the drug ads now just for the fun of it..one was on yesterday, something to do with allergies. They listed a whole laundry list of side-effects including nosebleeds and diarrhea. I laughed out loud at that..
I'd rather just sneeze all day! sheesh

The worst that could happen with that would be some old geezer running loose all over town like that.

Oh yeah, that explosive diarrhea..from that diet pill. I can see it now... ladies out having lunch at a nice outdoor restaurant. All of a sudden, gunshots ring out. Everyone ducks in fear..but wait..it's not gunshots, it's explosive diarrhea from one of the ladies. And look, she's wearing a white skirt. tsk tsk.

I don't think the med profession is helping either. When the Amer Pediatrics Assoc states that Stains for children as young as 9, may be a neccessity, I think its indicative of an overall problem. The problem can be addressed by educating children and parents about the need for and how to of nutrition. Schools are not stressing it, even many doctors don't. Most of the education on health that kids and adults get is from TV. I think we all know the direction and value of that information. In another thread here, I have presented an idea for supporting Dr David Katz and his freely provided program called "Nutrition Detectives" he is offering it to school systems. This could be a great aid for so many people. I know most of you here are acutely aware of health issues and are taking personal steps to address your own needs and your family's. Think of how many people don't even give health a second thought. Look at his program, if you can see that it might have positive impact on others, even if only a few take the information to heart, they would have life long benefit and even spread it. I am not asking much, just a little time, maybe e-mail or talk to people in your local school system, to have them look into it. Look at Dr Katz's site, even if it doesn't directly affect you, think of how many others it would.

Oh my gosh, you are too funny! Yes, I think that was Meridia. Can you imagine not being able to leave a 5 foot radius of your toiet just to be thin??? That has got to cause Gut Rot.

I am always stunned by the huge assortment of side effects that seem to come with virtually every drug and especially the ones now being advertised. On rare occasions I must take an antibiotic but for day-to-day I take only a blood pressure med and one for osteoporosis. I am hoping that by losing weight the way I am on the Mediterranean eating plan I will be able to get off the one for blood pressure and the one for osteoporosis is only for a limit of 5 years. I never fill prescriptions for any pain meds if I have some sort of procedure simply because I have a high pain threshold and can manage anything with a couple of Tylenol. When I was much younger and all my friends had young children, I was alway appalled by how many took their "sick" kids to the doctor for every runny nose and demanded antibiotics. Just try telling a mom that those kinds of meds don't work on viruses... No wonder there are so many drug-resistant bugs out there.
