First off, do you already have an ob? Even if you do you MUST ask questions w/ him AND go to the hosiptal that he/she uses and ask the nurses there about this doc. They are not going to tell you the doc is bad but you can find out the rate of c-sections the doctor does. My sis just had her first baby by c-section which in her case she HAD to (brain tumor and her nuero did not want any pushing that could cause more problems there). Well, this particular ob/gyn performs nothing BUT c-sections and he is NOT a high risk doctor. He told one of my sisters friends that her baby was going to be HUGE. The baby weighed a little over 6 lbs. He did the same w/ my sis and she had a little bitty baby, thankfully healthy. You do not want to be under the care of an ob that will do nothing but c-sections if you are wanting to have natural childbirth and/or try other methods to relieve pain. The nurses at the hospital later told my sis that this doc does nothing but c-sections and he does more than any other doctor that uses that hospital. That is not a good thing. The next week I had to go pick up my sis and the baby and take her to her doctors visit as she could not drive for at least 2 weeks and could not pick up the baby. Afterall, having a c-section is major surgery. Since it is major surgery there are also other considerations taken into account at the hospital before they will let you eat and then be discharged. It was the second day before my sis could eat because of these policies. With a normal delivery you can eat right after delivering. Then w/ a normal delivery you can drive and pick up your own baby w/o fear. We said the reason this doc does nothing but c-sections and some doctors are this way is so that they are not inconvienced. They don't want wake up calls in the middle of the night or to be at the hospital all day on weekends or holidays. So do check w/ your doctor or future doctor about their own beliefs. Oh, and this doc told my sis that they did not need to attend childbirth classes since it was a c-section. UMM, they talk and discuss other things in these classes that EVERY parent can benfit from.
