What do you think is a fair hourly rate for a handyman? I was quoted 130.00 per hour which seemed a bit on the high side but maybe I'm wrong.

Rates vary as to the job that needs to be done, the experience of the person doing it, and your location (among other things).

I don't think the type of job matters since they are charging by the hour, not a flat fee. Also, I was planning on having a short list of odd jobs done.

Google - there is a calculator, that gives you an idea for a whole list of jobs in your location.

I noticed that nowadays barely skilled handymen charge lawyers rates...

Good luck

I cant answer on that hourly rate but Id like to touch on a few other points.

Not all "handymen" are equal. An amateur who has a cheap hourly rate will cost you more than a professional at a higher rate. It will take them longer and in the end you may not get a quality job.
Also the amateur may limit your project to his skill level.

Know your project. Is it simple like yard clean up or does it require an experienced craftsman.
Don't hire a craftsman for yardwork. That's where you go with the cheaper guy.

If they charge by the hour it can encourage them to take longer so they get paid more.
Also that chat you're having about the weather. That's on the clock.
On a big job I prefer a flat fee.

Either way don't pay them all the money until the job is completely done.
A little upfront and the rest when its completed.
Be on the lookout for guys who do all the easy stuff and bail on the hard stuff.

Here in Denver, I use a handyman service that charges $75 for the first hour and $60 for every subsequent hour, billed in 15 minute increments. They also charge a $20 trip fee and, if necessary, a $35 trip for estimates. Materials are extra. They also give me a small senior discount.

Going rate here seems to be 75-100 but it varies widely with experience and the work you're asking them to do. If they have more skills expect to pay more, if they are newer or just starting out then pay less. Also if it's a side job they will often charge less per hour if you work with their schedule.

This is true. I think I've been very lucky here and have had two really good handyman guys. Unfortunately the first one kept 'falling off the wagon' so wasn't all that reliable. The guy I have now is great and no job is too big or too small. He is a retired electrician and worked construction all his life. I feel I'm not taking advantage of his talents but have only needed small 'honey do' stuff done. He's great for putting together furniture that comes in boxes! When I asked how much he charges I nearly fell over...$12.50 hour. Well, after I saw how well he worked, etc., I'm paying him $15 hour which is more that I make. He's worth it.

There are quite a few 'handyman' businesses here. One of them is Hire A Vet. I think their rates are like $30 hour. I went to them when I needed someone to put rock down in my front and back yards. What they did was turn me over to a contractor who did the job. I am happy with it. I want the interior of my house painted and will go back for that. They do have qualified painters but I guess there are a few things they do recommend a contractor. My next handyman project is to straighten out my paver sidewalk. It was thrown together to keep the rock from covering the ground necessitating removing it later.
