When I turn on the ceiling fan in my bedroom the entire housing rotates about 1/8 of a turn. Then when I turn it off it rotates back. It's the entire fan including light fixture.

I looked at it but didn't see anything loose but I'm really not sure what to look for.

Is it a ceiling-hugger, or on a "downrod" ? If downrod, is the rod moving or just the housing ?

Probably the bracket that holds the fan to its electrical box in the ceiling is loose. or the box and it's bracket are loose from ceiling joists.

If ceiling-hugger,
Turn off power at circuit breaker.
Remove blades
Remove motor cover
Inspect bracket screws
Inspect elec box.
Tighten as necessary

If down rod, similar at ceiling collar

See https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...YSU&gws_rd=ssl for typical installations

It's the down rod type. Not sure if the rod is moving. I'll. check tonight.

This doesn't seem like it's going to be very fun to troubleshoot.

You should ask yourself if this isn't the sort of problem you should just pretend not to see. Or, if somebody else in the house is the one seeing it, that you shouldn't respond with a convincing, "They're supposed to do that."

My 9 yr old pointed it out to my wife who pointed it out to me.

It's gotta be fixed. If something is loose I certainly don't want it to fall on us. The only good thing is we hardly ever use that fan.

The pivot ball on the end of the downrod is not seated correctly in the hanger.

The ball has a groove in it; and the hanger has a slight tooth within the hanging space. They should align with each other. That is what keep the torque from the motor from reversing the housing and the downrod in the hanger.
