Aloha All,

I have been living in Europe, then NY, NV, CA, HI and soon moving to Houston by September 15th. I have never asked anything about all the states I moved in before, but for some reasons I need some advises on my next move to Houston Texas. I have read a lot of posts here, lots of stats on cities and forums about Houston. People have so many diversified opinions that it is hard for me to make up my mind and picture the whole deal.
Note that I have never visited Houston, only Austin 4 times (3 months) and Dallas twice (2 weeks).

I will be working at 4# (4 numbers) Felipe Ave. I thought about renting a loft or older style apart in a nice, safe and euro style downtown area. What are the safe, best, live sections of the town to live in ? I like the small streets with shops, and all amenities close to where I live. Any suggestion ?
What is the average price for a safe, secure, nice 2br rental in a DT/galleria/uptown areas. I am planning on spending no more than $1000 a month, is that fair, good, great or bad ?

Thanks for your time and responses.

Coco

Also I forgot to mention that I love the ocean, Swim, body surf and sail. Is the ocean great for body surf ? I know it's a great sailing/boating place but if someone can tell about the waves stat, it would be very appreciated.
Thanks again

The water in Galveston is pretty nasty. We moved here from Hawaii (grew up here- Hawaii was a military station) and my hubby misses surfing like nothing else. We went to galveston shortly after we returned on a little weekend "vacation" and I cried. Not a good cry...... People were in the water but after the blue water on the islands it really made me cry. And the heat......

I don't know much about rent downtown- I live a little north of the city- but $1000 would get you an average 2bed apt here. It may not go so far down there.......

You may want to budget a little higher to live in the cool, new downtown lofts of Houston. I'd say 1500-1800.
Better areas are closer to Rice and Texas Medical Center. You will be moving right after college is back in session, so good luck finding anything this late.

The comment about crying at the sight of Galveston 'beach' made me laugh! We came back from 'the beach' and were invited by friends to a weekend at the lake. They couldn't understand why I spent the whole time in shorts and T-shirt with sandals on barely getting my feet wet... Maybe if I'd cried they'd have understood.
