Alabama will end its participation in all federally-funded pandemic unemployment programs on June 19.

Gov. Kay Ivey announced the move this afternoon, making the state the latest to end the programs that added money to unemployment benefits and began last year as a response to massive layoffs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The programs include Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, which provides for an additional $300 weekly payment to the state’s maximum weekly benefit amount of $275.

It certainly makes sense. No way a person should be making more money sitting at home than they would by holding down a job.

I completely agree. It is past time for this to end.

That is exactly what day-traders and trust fund babies do.

Working at some jobs can actually end up costing money. I once estimated the costs of getting a part-time job in the closest towns just as something to do. With the price of gas at the time, and wear and tear on the car, the first hour + would have been working for free. Start adding in other job related costs like uniforms, meals out, day care, and I can see where some jobs are net negative unless you are willing to hot bunk in a cheap apartment near the job and give up any life outside of work.

Reality is, there are a lot of crap jobs that pay crap and put people in a hamster exercise wheel trying to get ahead. At that wage level, vacations are a dream, at best. I don't cry any tears for those employers who can't get workers back in the wheel easily. (And I hired a LOT of low paid workers in my time.)

The White House press secretary was asked about this. She said there was no evidence that this was happening. You can decide for yourself why reality is being ignored.

I asked someone who is one of the people who will be losing the federal unemployment on June 19. His total unemployment will be cut back by about $1100 per month. He said that is OK because he still has state unemployment. Note his state unemployment by itself made up for about 80-90% of what his job had been paying.
