Unlike Germany's Autobahn, "Alabama Autobahn" was not designed to safely drive at high speeds.

The 565 has been partially resurfaced. The final pourous layer isn't to be added until next spring after temps warm. That means that the road will have a lot less traction in the rain, and we'll still have pooling in places that we currently do.

Those advocating lower speed limits do not remember how bad I-565 was the first years after it was built when the speed limit was a ridiculous 50 MPH. Lots of tailgating and rear end collisions. Memorial Parkway South exit backed up to Governors Drive with lots of breaking in line.

I remember back in 1995 when the nationwide 55 mph limit was repealed.

For once ALDoT was on the job, and the 70 mph signs on I-565 went up overnight as I recall. Then the Huntsville Times decided to mount a campaign that 70 mph was too fast through downtown. After much blood was spilled, the limit through downtown was slashed to 65 mph. Like anybody slows down anywa.

Here is the US? The Washington DC metro area traffic is just stupid due to all the self-centered, self-important people. Boston and New York are bad if you don’t understand the driving culture. And every crazy story usually begins with “a Florida man…”

I drive 90~95 mph in the California desert 2-lane roads. Who worries about cops when you can see a couple of miles ahead?
