In preparation for mucho mulching, I've been mulling over my options. Alabama appropriate green things, I need to take additional measures to promote the possibility of them surviving the next winter (this past one saw them all suffer potted in a freezing garage...with varying results.)

Wheat straw is pretty commonly available. Call the co-op or feed stores and ask who has it available at a good price. I know Griggs, northwest of Athens sells it, but there should be places closer to you.
