“Let me set a couple of things straight: The border is not open. Now, maybe some people think it is because my Republican colleagues every day for the last two years have come to the floor screaming, ‘The border is open, the border is open, the border is open.’ But the border is not open, and that is just a fact,” McGovern said.

“Today there are approximately 38,000 people in immigration detention, which is 4,000 more than what DHS is funded for, and roughly what the Trump administration averaged in fiscal year 2018. The Biden administration has also significantly increased removals in ways that many on our side of the aisle are concerned violates due process,” McGovern continued. “Since the end of Title 42 last year, the Biden administration has removed or returned to Mexico close to 500,000 individuals. The total is nearly equivalent to the number of people removed in all of fiscal year 2019 under the Trump administration.”

“So please, please stop making things up, and stop claiming the border is open. It is not.”

Homeland Security reported 3.2 million people came through the border in 2023, 2.2 million in 2022, 1.72 million in 2021 and approximately 2+ million gotaways in the last three years, that's an open border. Whomever says otherwise, is not telling the truth.

Lol, I don't believe anything that a Democrat claims. What we have are "virtual" open borders under Biden and he set new records for illegal entry. Even Mayorkas has said that 85% of these "migrants" are being allowed into our country. 500, 000 removals compared to the millions that are being allowed into our country? Please........

If there are 38,000 people in immigration detention then the border must be open or they could not have come in. Also, if they are in detention here, they are still here, and are illegal, why have they not been sent back?

Good question. And, if the border wasn't open, why does Biden say that if he is given emergency powers (he could enforce the laws instead, which he is required to do and kick them out) he would shutdown the border, IF IT BECOMES OVERWHELMED and if they allow 5,000 per day to come in, and give him billions for the wars he is trying to keep going. Now, if the border isn't open, why would he need emergency powers (do not give him any powers at all) to shut it down? Oh, plus he wants more border patrol agents to move those 38,000 and others more quickly into OUR country.

"Let me set a couple of things straight: The border is not open"

That's why 6 million have illegally entered the country and 85% of them are allowed to stay. It's also why 1.6 million have managed to completely evade authorities after illegally entering the country.

If 1,000 people speed on a highway and only 45 are caught does that mean there was no speed limit and no enforcement?

"Open border" literally means there is no security, people are free to cross whenever and wherever they please. Like a state border. We obviously need more security but the Mexican border is not like a state border and that's what this guy was trying to say.

Now remove the rest of the 21,500,000 other illegal invaders currently residing in America.

I wish Rep. McGovern would stop making things up.

I know Democrats like to pretend to be obtuse about this topic, but the border is open both in a literal sense and a figurative sense. Border Patrol, under Alejandro Mayorkas, has cut holes in some of the existing barriers in order to make it easier for illegal aliens to come into our country. And then of course in the figurative sense, we have people streaming across our border claiming asylum for reasons that aren’t even acceptable asylum reasons AND WE KNOW IT, but refuse to do anything about it, because Democrats want these people in the country.

So yes, Re. McGovern — please stop spreading disinformation.
