Possibly looking to buy in Greencastle. I love the open feeling when looking. I like to work with my hands and am retired. What kind of drive time am I looking at if I need 2 X 4's, hardware, building materials, general items for upkeep of a home, shopping for staples and things like that? I'm coming from an area where I have to drive to and from my current home about 5 to 25 miles to get these items. So drive times are not a hassle for me.
Thanks,
David

Google Maps has a feature that allows you to look for specific types of stores, etc. based on a specific or general location. Using that function would allow you to answer all your questions regarding stores, restaurants, etc.

Well, Greencastle can be okay for some shopping. There is an Aldi's here, and a kroger for groceries. There is a Walmart, though I tend to avoid shopping there if possible. There is a local lumber company and a small hardware store. We avoid local shopping and eating--no decent restaurants--and shop for garden, lumber, hardware, etc. in Terre Haute. Drive is so much more pleasant than going east to Danville, Avon or Plainfield. All suburban and high traffic. Caveat we found when we retired here, and situation is worsening: local DePauw University runs the town and much of county. DePauw employees run for office, and ensure their candidates win. Rest of county may be discouraged, which would explain why at the last mayoral election only 10% of electorate actually voted. There are no lectures or free concerts or any other things done for community. the local Ivy Tech 'community' college offers no continuing education classes. We leave town frequently to go to Terre Haute for the ISU Osher/OLLIE learning programs. Also, recently the county of Putnam increased the county income tax to 2%and if you plan to improve your home as we have, your property taxes will go up each year. Keep all aspects in mind as you look, and good luck with your community search!
